Best friends Woodrow and Aiden spend all of their free time building MAD MAX-inspired flamethrowers and muscle cars in preparation for a global apocalypse. But when Woodrow meets a charismatic young woman and falls hard in love, he and Aiden quickly integrate into a new group of friends, setting off on a journey of love and hate, betrayal, infidelity, and extreme violence more devastating and fiery than any of their apocalyptic fantasies.

“I laughed, I gasped, I felt touched by the warmth, I felt disturbed by the madness, I marveled at how real it all seemed, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.”

VHS NIGHT: RAD

Friday, September 2nd at 8:00pm

rad
We here at The Shadowbox know the only way to watch a truly classic 80′s film is to watch it on VHS. So, we’ve dusted off the old VCR, cleaned the heads and adjusted the tracking for our new program: VHS NIGHT.To christen our new program, we’ve picked the greatest BMX movie of all time, appropriately titled…RAD. This also just happens to be it’s 25th anniversary.
Cru Jones only knows one thing: How to ride his BMX bike. So when the mega-BMX race comes to his sleepy little town, he overcomes towering obstacles to have his shot at greatness, but not before the corporate powers try to take him, and his team, down. “Full House’s” Lori Laughlin, Olympic gymnast Bart Connor, and Talia Shire(Adrian Balboa of “Rocky”) star in this coming of age film of rising to greatness against all odds, and standing firm against the forces that tear us down. There’s also a lot of BMX racing.

Sponsored by our rad friends at Ride Solutions!

The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee Scratch Perry

Saturday, September 10th at 8:00pm

Finally in theaters after a lengthy post-festival absence, THE UPSETTER: THE LIFE & MUSIC OF LEE SCRATCH PERRY tells the story of Lee “Scratch” Perry, who is every bit as much a wizard as a magician. Working in a Kingston studio called the Black Ark, outfitted with hyper-customized recording and remixing equipment that could charitably be describes as low-end, he created some of the most astonishing and complex musical textures ever heard, this is Jamaican dub at its source and there is much to appreciate in it. This film shows us the Upsetter as he talks about his music, recounts his life, demonstrates his remixing technique and goes to the edge of insanity again and again. We hear unbelievable stories about his life and the music business in Jamaica, where there are no rules. The interviews with Perry leave no doubt that this is a man who marches to the beat of his own echoplex, his speech is like a rich music all its own, it’s as odd as his bizarre electro-organic music. It also contains some of the most astonishing footage ever seen anywhere of an artist at work. The tiny Perry seems possessed as he works the dials and mixes in more ingredients to his strangely harmonious web of sound. It’s like watching God create a flower.
